Supreme Court Justice Dies
2
U.S. Supreme Court Justice Antonin Scalia, the leading conservative voice on the high court and the current longest serving member, died over the weekend at the age of 79. Scalia died in his sleep during a visit to Texas. His official cause of death is simply being announced as having died of natural causes. His death set off an immediate debate about whether President Barack Obama should fill the seat in an election year. Obama said Saturday night that he plans to nominate a replacement, but Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell said the nomination should wait until the next president comes into office. Appointed to the court in 1986 by President Ronald Reagan, Scalia was a conservative icon who transformed the court by instilling in it his belief that judges should follow the precise words of the Constitution and not apply a modern interpretation.

In Other News The three big prizes at the 58th Annual Grammy Awards went three different ways Monday night: Taylor Swift's "1989" album winning album of the year; record of the year went to "Uptown Funk“; and Ed Sheeran won song of the year for "Thinking Out Loud.” A massive diamond among the largest ever discovered was recently unearthed in Angola. At 404.2 carats, it measures about 7 cm across -- about the length of a credit card. The world record was a 3,106 carat gem, called the "Cullinan." It weighed in at a massive 1.3 pounds and was discovered in South Africa in 1905. That stone was cut to adorn the royal sceptor, one of Britian's crown jewels, and is on display at the Tower of London. The diamond discovery announced Monday would make it the 27th largest diamond ever recorded.
