pH Acids and Bases

Acid Vs. Base Terms to describe chemicals 2 “extremes” of each other Cancel each other out (neutralize) Neutral substance = not acid or base pH – measures how acidity and alkalinity – Scale ranges 0  14

pH Scale 7 = neutral (pure water) 0 – 6.9 = acidic 7.1 – 14 = basic/alkaline

pH Scale Strong acid = 0 – 2.9 Weak acid = 3 – 6.9 Strong Base = 11.1 – 14 Weak Base = 7.1 – 11

pH in the Human Body Acidity: – Gastric juice (stomach) = pH ~2 – Urine = pH ~6 Alkalinity: – Intestinal fluid = pH ~8 – Blood = pH ~7.4

Homeostasis pH levels in body need to be maintained Buffers = help with maintaining pH levels

pH Demo
