Warm Up-10/29 When was the battle of Antietam? Write down three facts that you know to be true about Antietam.

"That on the first day of January, in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty- three, all persons held as slaves within any State or designated part of a State, the people whereof shall then be in rebellion against the United States, shall be then, thenceforward, and forever free; and the Executive Government of the United States, including the military and naval authority thereof, will recognize and maintain the freedom of such persons, and will do no act or acts to repress such persons, or any of them, in any efforts they may make for their actual freedom.”

Emancipation Proclamation January 1 st, 1863 Abraham Lincoln declared African Americans “then, thenceforward, and forever free.”

What states are left out? Lincoln declares the following states in rebellion, therefore declaring their slaves free “Arkansas, Texas, Louisiana, Mississippi, Alabama, Florida, Georgia, South Carolina, North Carolina, Tennessee, and Virginia, (except the forty-eight counties designated as West Virginia)”

Emancipation Proclamation January 1 st, 1863 Abraham Lincoln declared African Americans “then, thenceforward, and forever free.” The border states were exempt from the proclamation

Agree or disagree? Lincoln should have issued the Emancipation Proclamation immediately after the war began

Timing Waited for a victory at Antietam to announce it Didn’t want to do it immediately after the war declaration because… – Wanted to keep loyalty of border states – Some northerners did not believe in emancipation

Effects of the Emancipation Proclamation War is now a war for a “new birth of freedom” 190,000 African Americans fought in the Union’s armed forces

Emancipation Proclamation in 4 min How does Lincoln defend his actions? What were the effects of the Emancipation Proclamation?

The news of the President’s great act was received with a thrill throughout the loyal North. Among men who love liberty, the rejoicings were universal. Extra newspapers were eagerly bought in the great cities, and men stopped in the streets to read the decree. The general joy was augmented by the simultaneous intelligence of the victories in Tennessee and Mississippi. Altogether, the New Year began with a general burst of enthusiasm. May the year establish Liberty, and crown it with Peace.
