Reality Grid Workshop 15 June 2004 Reality Grid Workshop Royal Society, 15 June 2004 Some future issues for UK Science

Reality Grid Workshop 15 June 2004 Reality Grid Workshop 1.10 year framework review 2.Full economic cost 3.RAE 2008 4.The UK e-Science Programme

Reality Grid Workshop 15 June 2004 1. 10 year framework review  Announced by Chancellor  Consultation period now closed  Builds on significant increase in science funding  Rumoured possible doubling in real terms in ten years. Likely areas?? –Innovation –Full economic cost

Reality Grid Workshop 15 June 2004 2. Full economic cost  Builds on Transparency Review work which identifies proper costs in Universities  First targets to understand proper costs of activities, including renewal of infrastructure  FEC for individual projects, by early 2005… –From 2005/6, RC projects more fully funded, by extra £120 million –but you won’t get it all! –Scale of potential bureaucracy unclear at best, alarming at worst

Reality Grid Workshop 15 June 2004 3. RAE 2008  New arrangements a significant step forward – see DJW input!DJW input  Govt committed to Dual support and RAE 2008, but the pressure rumbles on in context of Full Economic Costs and reduction in bureaucracy.

Reality Grid Workshop 15 June 2004 4. The UK e-Science Programme First Phase: 2001 –2004  Application Projects –£74M –All areas of science and engineering  Core Programme –£15M Research infrastructure –£40M Collaborative industrial projects Second Phase: 2003 –2006  Application Projects –£96M –All areas of science and engineering  Core Programme –£16M Research Infrastructure –DTI Technology Fund

Reality Grid Workshop 15 June 2004 4. The UK e-Science Programme…  An exciting portfolio of Research Council e- Science projects –Beginning to see e-Science infrastructure deliver some early ‘wins’ in several areas –Astronomy, Chemistry, Bioinformatics, Engineering, Environment, Healthcare ….  The UK unique in strong industrial component –Over 60 UK companies contributing over £30M –Engineering, Pharmaceutical, Petrochemical, IT companies, Commerce, Media, …

Reality Grid Workshop 15 June 2004 4. And the future…  Grid Operations Centre, National Grid Service and AAA services  Open Middleware Infrastructure Institute  National e-Science Institute  Digital Curation Centre  International Standards Activity  Needs continued support from Research Councils with identifiable e-Science funding lines post 2006

Reality Grid Workshop 15 June 2004 Thank you and well done on Reality Grid activities and recognition
