Obesity & Young Children By: London Mallette EEC 4731

Overview Obesity is something that is already affecting most adult American’s, even worse its now affecting children as young as the age of 4. The technical definition of obesity is “the state of being well above one’s normal weight”. Although obesity is a health problem in itself obesity is also a gateway to other health issues such as diabetes, high blood pressure, and even sleeping issues.

Signs/Symptoms These are some common signs of obesity: BMI is 20% over normal BMI for age Eating more then the average child

Management of Condition The management of this condition can really rely on the parents shoulders. Starting to instill better habits for nutrition and physical fitness can really help this issue. Teaching children that grabbing fruit over candy tastes just as good but is the better choice.

Modifications for Teachers The best modifications for any teacher that may have a child that is obese is to start showing a good example of being healthy and physically fit. Also, when doing parties tell parents that only fruit and vegetables are allowed to be brought over cupcakes and candy. This idea would also be best for teachers who’s students have a regular snack everyday. The teacher should also keep an eye out for any bullying or emotional problems with the child.

My Class I think what I would do in my own class was to make sure students brought in healthy snacks. I would also make it a point to talk about being healthy and fit and how it makes your brain able to work better and them to learn more when they are being healthy.
