SHSP INTERSECTION EMPHASIS AREA
3
Emphasis Area Definition The term intersection crash is defined as a crash which occurs just before, just after or inside the limits where two or more highways join or cross.
4
Emphasis Area Goals To reduce the number of annual roadway intersection fatalities by 10 per year by December 31, 2014 To reduce the number of annual roadway intersection crashes involving incapacitating injuries by 100 per year by December 31, 2014
5
Intersection Emphasis Area Objectives To implement cost-effective countermeasures at acceptable deployment levels to achieve the planned reduction in intersection fatalities and incapacitating injury crashes To advance new strategies and concepts that support reductions in intersection fatalities and incapacitating injuries Program projects from current year Intersection Emphasis List
6
CMF – 0.806 (CMFs for Changing Left Turn Phasing Paper 12-2521) Implement Flashing Yellow Arrow where applicable
7
CMF = 0.85 (CMF Clearinghouse) Implement retroreflective backplates
8
CMF ~ 78% for rear-end, wet road crashes (CMF Clearinghouse) Implement High Friction Surface on applicable intersection approaches where applicable
9
Improve management of access near signalized/unsignalized intersections
11
Intersection Re-alignment
12
Local Engineering Strategies?
13
Develop standard signs and markings layout to be used by field personnel
14
Implement use of supplemental signal heads where applicable
16
Signal Head visibility

18
Provide Dashed Markings (Extended Left Edgelines) for Major-Road Continuity Across the Median Opening at Divided Highway Intersections
19
Guide motorists more effectively through complex intersections
21
Innovative Signs and Markings to assist drivers in judging available gaps
