CONFIDENTIAL 1 Good Afternoon! Today we are going to learn about ROUNDING whole numbers. 1.) Find the next number in the pattern. 22, 23, 25, 28, ____ 2.) Order these numbers from least to greatest. 567245589476 3.) Can you give me two numbers that add up to 32?

CONFIDENTIAL 2 Let's review what we learned in our last lesson.

CONFIDENTIAL 3 When we ESTIMATE, we find a number that is close to the exact number.

CONFIDENTIAL 4 ROUNDING is one of the ways we estimate. Some of the reasons we ROUND are: 1.) We want to use mental math. 2.) We don't need exact numbers. 3.) We want to know "about how many".

CONFIDENTIAL 5 We can use PLACE VALUE to ROUND. Let's round 2,345 to the nearest thousands place. First, we need to underline the thousands place. 2,345

CONFIDENTIAL 6 2,345 Second, we need to look at the digit just to the right of the underlined digit. * If that digit is 5 or more, we increase the underlined digit by 1. * If that digit is 4 or less, we do not change the underlined digit.

CONFIDENTIAL 7 2,345 Since this digit is 4 or less, we leave the 2 alone. Finally, we change all the digits to the right of the underlined digit to 0. 2,345 rounds to 2000

CONFIDENTIAL 8 We can round to any PLACE VALUE. For example, we can round to the tens place or the hundreds place or the millions place! Let's round 4,568,123 to the nearest hundred thousand.

CONFIDENTIAL 9 4,568,123 1. We underline the place we want to round to. 2. We look at the digit to the right of the underlined digit. (In this case, it's the hundred thousand.) (In this case, it's the 6.)

CONFIDENTIAL 10 4,568,123 3. Add 1 to the underlined digit if the digit to its right is 5 or more. Keep the underlined digit the same if the digit to its right is 4 or less. (In this case, we will increase the underlined digit to a 6) 4,568,123 rounds to 4,600,000 4. Change all of the digits to the right of the underlined digit to 0.

CONFIDENTIAL 11 You try one.... Round 67,489 to the nearest hundred. Remember your steps!

CONFIDENTIAL 12 Now let's see what happens when we round 67,989 to the nearest hundred. 67,989 Since 8 is 5 or more, we must increase the underlined digit by 1. The 9 becomes a 10!

CONFIDENTIAL 13 67,989 Since 8 is 5 or more, we must increase the underlined digit by 1. The 9 becomes a 10 and we carry the 1! The 7 increases by 1 and becomes 8 So if we round 67,989 to the nearest hundred......we get 68,000

CONFIDENTIAL 14 You try one..... Round 598 to the nearest tens place. Remember your steps!

CONFIDENTIAL 15 We call numbers like 45, 48, 52, 69, 74 a SET of data You can see that we ORDERED this SET of data from least to greatest.

CONFIDENTIAL 16 45, 48,, 69, 74 The middle number is called the MEDIAN SET of data 52,

CONFIDENTIAL 17 If we have an even number in the SET..... 24, 56, 59, 61, 83, 89 The MEDIAN is the number in the middle of these 2 numbers - or 60

CONFIDENTIAL 18 Can you tell me what is the MEDIAN of this set of data? 126, 178, 200, 202, 224, 236

CONFIDENTIAL 19 Break!

CONFIDENTIAL 20 game http://www.thekidzpage.com/onlinejigsawpuzzles/kids-jigsaw- puzzles/12-piece-jigsaw/03-27-07-boynbunny.html Click on the link below for some exciting puzzle

CONFIDENTIAL 21 A.) Can you find the MEDIAN of this set of data? 46, 48, 58, 62, 70, 72 B.) Can you ESTIMATE this sum by ROUNDING to the tens place? 28 + 32 + 38 ≈ This means "is approximately equal to".

CONFIDENTIAL 22 C.) Plot this number on the number line below. 4,385 4,3004,4004,350 Round 4,385 to the nearest hundred.

CONFIDENTIAL 23 Assessment 1.) What is one of the reasons that we ROUND? 2.) Round 6,789 to the nearest hundreds place. 3.) Round 2,492,635 to the nearest millions place. 4.) Round 567,320 to the nearest ten thousands place.

CONFIDENTIAL 24 5.) Round 3,962 to the nearest hundreds place. 6.) ORDER this SET of data from least to greatest. 234, 221, 189, 165, 286 7.) Find the MEDIAN of the above SET of data. 8.) Find the MEDIAN of this SET of data. 48, 51, 67, 69, 74, 79

CONFIDENTIAL 25 You did a GREAT job today!
