3 Fit For Work – So why am I not working? Out of 50 people interviewed previously on Incapacity Benefit or Employment and Support Allowance who had been found fit for work only one person was in full time work at the time if the interviews. 9 people were in part time work. All 50 people had experienced difficulties in finding work because of their health condition. 68% thought they would never return to work. 80% were not in work despite being found fit for work months earlier.

4 Our Proposals Increase the demand for labour in the Industrial Communities Areas. Raise the level of JSA to at least that of ESA – incentivise people to present themselves at fit for work. Penalties for getting assessments and decisions wrong. Help and support for those with health limiting conditions.

5 Our studies have shown the two main reasons that those with health limiting conditions give for their unemployment. Where are the policies dealing with these barriers to work as expressed by those confronting today’s Labour Market? A lack of suitable jobs. Employer discrimination towards those with a history of health issues.
