Planning an Exam Essay Must select useful evidence to help answer the essay questions Should plan your essay answers in rough Could double check the structure of the essay parts and start to write up your answer.

Part 1: Describe The aim: to demonstrate how much you know about a topic. 5 marks Try to explain or expand one or two points if you have time. This should be a short paragraph. Keep it to 5 well- expressed sentences. Look at any targets from previous describe questions!

Part 1: Describe Mark scheme check Describe - 5 marks 1 mark for each valid example identified, 2-3 marks for any examples that are described or explained. Award a maximum of 1 mark to general answers lacking in specific contextual knowledge.

Evidence for Part 1 In the back of your book, plan your answer to part 1 “Briefly describe the medical treatments provided at a Greek Asclepion” Note down 5 medical treatments (both supernatural and natural) that happened at an Asclepion

Part 2: Explain The aim: to say why or how something happened. Identify and explain 4 factors. 7 marks Identify & explain, identify & explain, identify & explain, identify & explain. Roughly one sentence for each pair. The odd extra sentence of explanation might help but don’t write too much. Look at any targets from previous explanation questions!

Part 2: Explain Mark scheme check Explain – 7 marks Level 1 General assertions (1) Level 2 Identifies examples of appropriate factors (2-4) Level 3 Explains one appropriate factor (5-6) Level 4 Explains more than one specific factor (7)

Evidence for Part 2 In the back of you books, plan your answer for part 2: “Explain how Galen contributed to the development of medicine.” 1.Identify something Galen did 2.Explain why it contributes to the development of medicine. 3.Repeat another 3 times.

Part 3: Evaluate The aim: to show you can explain both sides of a debate and then explain your opinion using evidence to support it. 8 Marks Write three SHORT paragraphs. A: What evidence supports one side of the argument. B: What evidence supports the other side of the argument. C: Your answer to the question and the evidence it’s based on. Quality of written work is marked on this question. Look at any targets from previous evaluation questions!

Part 3: Mark scheme check * Written communication assessed in this question Level 1 General assertions (1-2) Level 2 Identifies / evidences one view point (3) Level 3 Identifies / evidences both view points (4) Level 4 Explains one view point in context of question (5-6) Level 5 Explains both view points in context of question (7) Level 6 both viewpoints explained and a clear conclusion (8)

Part 3: Evidence In the back of you books, plan your answer for part 3: “Who is more important to the history of medicine, the Greeks or the Romans? Explain your answer.” Plan the three paragraphs seperately: 1.Evidence that explains/shows Greek contributions 2.Evidence that explains/shows Roman contributions 3.Your conclusion/answer to the question and why you think that.
