2 Announcements 1. Tomorrow is the day to Vote for the bond issue. 2. Feb. 13th is a trading card game tournament. $5 3. Picture Day Feb. 11th; science class 4. No school Monday Feb. 15th 5. State Writing Test Feb. 23 and Feb 24.

3 Housekeeping Pick up your work. If your MLA heading is missing, write it in, and turn it back into the LATE WORK drawer.

6 Laptop Proceedures 1. You will be assigned a number, use only the laptop with the number you have been assigned. 2. Sign the card for your laptop. This is acknowledging that should you damage your laptop in any way, you will take full responsibility for it. 3. After using your laptop, be sure to 'log off' so no one else can use your login. 4. NO ONE will leave the room until ALL laptops have been returned.

7 Step One: Choose Your Topic 1. Log into your computer using your student ID and Password. 2. Open a web browser (chrome, Internet explorer) and go to Ms. Cathey's webpage. 3. Click the link: NYTimes 200 argumentative Writing prompts. 4. Choose your prompt. Numbers 2, 4, 9, 26, 38, 47, 78, 85, 111, 114, 136 are SUGGESTED. Numbers 81, 97, 143, 144, 154 are BANNED. 5. Read the attached article. Print if necessary. 6. Decide if you are for or against the prompt's suggestion. Turn in your opinion online.

10 Step Two: Find Your Second Article 1. Go to EBSCOhost: follow the steps shown in class. 2. Using KEYWORDS find a second article that supports your topic. 3. Read your second article. Print if necessary. 4. Turn in the information for your articles online.

11 Creative Friday Write a journal entry about something that is happening in your life right now or write about some of your accomplishments/proudest moments in your past. 5-8 Sentences

12 Step Three: Synthesize Your Information 1. Use the Nonfiction Essay Graphic Organizer to organize the information in your two articles. Available from Ms. Cathey or online.

13 How to keep track of quotes 1. Use sticky notes 2. Write them all down on a piece of paper. 3. T-Charts 4. Article 1Article 2

14 Step Four: Produce a Rough Draft 1. Using your Nonfiction Essay Graphic Organizer as a guideline, begin handwriting or typing the rough draft of your essay. It should have five paragraphs to coincide with the five parts of the graphic Organizer. 2. Check your rough draft for grammar and spelling errors. 3. Check your rough draft for readability and flow. Is it easy to read or do you stutter? 4. Turn in your handwritten or typed rough draft. Email to cathey.lindsey@unionps.org with your name and prompt as the subject.

15 Step Five: Polish your Final Draft 1. Add a Hook. 2. Double check you have all of the required pieces. 3. Have a friend look over your essay and make suggestions to improve it (THIS IS IMPORTANT) 4. Turn in your typed, printed essay.

16 Step Six: Presenting Your Information 1. Create a New Powerpoint 2. The information in each Paragraph of your essay should have its own slide. DO NOT copy your paragraph onto a slide. 3. Add a Theme or Background. 4. Breathe. Present.
