Chapter #6- The Great War Essential Question- How did America participate in WWI?

I- Motivation for War A) The major nations in Europe had begun to join political/military alliances 1) Alliance- a formal treaty between nations that guarantees military and political support.

B) Two major alliances divide the European continent into two camps. 1) These European nations have IMPERIAL motivations to control as much territory and resources as possible

C) European nations also began an ARMS RACE 1) Arms Race- when nations compete to have larger and more advanced militaries

II- Triple Alliance A) Triple Alliance- These groups is made up of Austria/Hungary, Germany, and Italy. 1) Germany is the strongest member of this alliance. Has the strongest military and economy.

2) Germany was lead by a monarch named Kiser Wilhelm a) He is very vocal in his feelings of Germany superiority over the rest of Europe.

III-Triple Entente/ Central Powers/ Allies A) This alliance is made up of France, United Kingdom (Great Briton), and Russia. 1) Both alliance groups try to gain more power over the other with economic deals while building up their military forces

IV- Inciting Moment A) On June 29, 1914 the crown prince from Austria, Archduke Ferdinand, went on a good will tour of Austria’s neighboring nation, Bosnia. 1) While on a car tour of Bosnia’s capital, the car is attacked

B) A revolutionary group called the Serbian Black Hand, wanted Bosnia to be united with Serbia. 1) After chasing the Archduke all over town, they succeed in killing him. 2) His assassination will become WW I's inciting moment.

C) The Domino Effect 1) Austria blames Serbia for the killing of the Archduke. 2) Austria declares war on Serbia. 3) Russia (supporting the Serbs and not liking the German/Austrians) declares war on Austria

4) France supports Russia in their cause 5) Germany declares war on Russia and France 6) When Germany invades Belgium to get to France, Great Briton declares war on Germany/Austria

D) The German Army advanced across France and came within sight of Paris, the capital of France 1) The French Army pushes them back but the front grinds to a stand still

3) Neither side is able to push the other back. 4) Both sides dig fighting trenches to attack one another. 5) These trench lines create the Western Front
