2 Paine met Ben Franklin in London-they became friends and Franklin wrote Paine a letter of introduction which helped to get a job in Philadelphia He published Common Sense – a 47 page pamphlet denouncing King George III as a “royal brute”. The pamphlet sold ½ a million copies BACKGROUND
