1 Do Now  Our school is applying for a Samsung Solve for Tomorrow grant and I want some input from you all. If we win this grant, we could win up to $100,000 for a technology grant for this school – something that could help turn us into a REAL science and engineering establishment!  Give your thoughts for the following question on a separate piece of paper.  How do you think science, technology, engineering and mathematics can help your community improve? Be specific.

6 Unit 2 : Kinematics Describes the movement of objects using words, diagrams, numbers, graphs, and equations.

7 What’s the difference between these two measurements? Measurement 1  To get from MASE to Kroger, you need to travel about 15 seconds down Jefferson and about 30 seconds down Cleveland. Measurement 2  To get from MASE to Kroger, I would travel about ¼ mile west from the parking lot and then at the light, I would travel about ½ mile west again, pass the light at Poplar and there’s Kroger. From MASE, Kroger is a little ½ mile southwest of us.

8 Scalars have magnitude (or size) ONLY  You only know size but no direction of movement  How much something has changed position is called distance  Examples: temperature, mass, energy, speed  Demonstration: moving a brick  The brick moved 5 meters.

9 Vectors have magnitude AND direction  A vector is a numerical value (magnitude, or size) in a specific direction  Vectors are drawn as arrows and the direction of the arrow is the direction of the vector while the length of the arrow is the magnitude

10 Vectors  How would you describe the direction of the block moving in terms of a vector quantity?  The brick moved 5 meters to the right  This measurement which includes direction is called a displacement.

11 Real World Application: Football  A quarterback’s pass is a great example of a vector because it has direction (usually somewhere downfield) and magnitude (how hard the ball is thrown)  Video from NBC

12 Real World Application: Billiards/Pool  Billiard ball velocity vector would tell us the speed its going (magnitude) and in what direction  We saw in the video that vectors can be added together to make a parallelogram  This helps us figure out what would happen to one still ball hit by one that is moving at a specific velocity  Billiards players use vectors to predict where both balls will go upon impact

13 Real World Application: Boats and Planes  Imagine a situation where you're in a boat or a plane, and you need to plot a course. There aren't streets or signs along the way. You will need to plan your navigation on a map. You know where you're starting and where you want to be. The problem is how to get there.

21 Distance VS. Displacement  Distance : how much ground an object has covered. Distance is a scalar quantity.  Displacement : The object's overall change in position. Displacement is a vector quantity.

30  Exit tickets will be my daily way of seeing whether or not you have understood the objectives we have gone over during class each day.  They will NOT be graded for accuracy but WILL be graded for completion so make sure you always try each and every question.  These exit tickets must be done silently and independently. If you violate this, you will lose your participation points for the day.  You must wait to begin your exit ticket until Ms. Kemal says to begin.
