If you had to choose to walk one of two routes to the same destination, which would you choose, the shortcut or the long way? If you take the shortcut, do you end up in a different place than the long way? If no, why is the shortcut the better way to go? Write down a measurement that has no direction to it. + What’s the difference between these two measurements? To get from MASE to Kroger, you need to travel about 15 seconds down Jefferson and about 30 seconds down Cleveland. To get from MASE to Kroger, I would travel about ¼ mile west from the parking lot and then at the light, I would travel about ½ mile west again, pass the light at Poplar and there’s Kroger. + Scalars have magnitude (or size) ONLY You only know size but no direction of movement How much something has changed position is called distance Examples: temperature, mass, energy, speed Demonstration: moving a brick The brick moved 5 meters.

+ Vectors have magnitude AND direction A vector is a numerical value (magnitude, or size) in a specific direction Vectors are drawn as arrows and the direction of the arrow is the direction of the vector while the length of the arrow is the magnitude

+ Vectors How would you describe the direction of the block moving in terms of a vector quantity? The brick moved 5 meters to the right This measurement which includes direction is called a displacement.

+ Real World Application: Football A quarterback’s pass is a great example of a vector because it has direction (usually somewhere downfield) and magnitude (how hard the ball is thrown) Video from NBC

+ Real World Application: Billiards/Pool Billiard ball velocity vector would tell us the speed its going (magnitude) and in what direction We saw in the video that vectors can be added together to make a parallelogram This helps us figure out what would happen to one still ball hit by one that is moving at a specific velocity Billiards players use vectors to predict where both balls will go upon impact

+ Real World Application: Boats and Planes Imagine a situation where you're in a boat or a plane, and you need to plot a course. There aren't streets or signs along the way. You will need to plan your navigation on a map. You know where you're starting and where you want to be. The problem is how to get there.

+ Distance VS. Displacement Distance: how much ground an object has covered total during travel. Distance is a scalar quantity. Displacement: The object’s change in position from starting to ending point. Displacement is a vector quantity.

If you violate this, you will lose your participation points for the day. You must wait to begin your exit ticket until Ms. Kemal says to begin.
