As you learned earlier in the unit, Guilds were groups of skilled workers who banded together for financial protection and safety They had a strict hierarchy and structure Master Craftsman Journeyman Apprentice

European Guilds began to become powerful around 1100 and reached their height around 1300 CE In some cities a guild could control labor, could be part of city government, and could often wield considerable political influence. New guilds were created in new cities by letters of charter which established the right of a guild to operate in a town or city.

With the rise of nations and increasing trade Guilds became very unpopular with those who wanted to do business. They were often criticized for monopolistic practices, which hurt business for others. With the founding of nations, growth of trade, and increase in power of larger governments, by the end of the Middle Ages most guilds were largely reduced in power or abolished.

Today we look at Unions in many ways as modern day guilds. They protect their members They require qualifications to get into They in some cases can be very powerful
