Examples of Soft Matters Everyday life: glues, paints, soaps... Biological materials (human body is a “ soft machine ” ) Colloidal dispersions Polymer melts/solutions Liquid crystal etc....

Characteristics of Soft Matters Length scales: intermediate between atomic sizes and macroscopic scales (e.g. tens of nanometers) Coarse-grained models may be available (omitting the details of atomic-level structures) Fluctuations and Brownian motion are important The propensity to self-assemble
