EXAMPLE 4 Using a Verbal Model SOLUTION Let n represent the number of lessons your friend takes. = 12n = 8(n + 2) + 20 Write algebraic model 12n = 8n + 36 Simplify. Divide each side by 4 n = 9 12n = 8n + 16 + 20 Distributive property Subtract 8n from each side. 4n = 36 ANSWER Your friend pays the same total amount as you for 9 lessons.
