4 familymedicine.uottawa.ca Family Medicine Resident Scholarly Project Why? A competent family physician demonstrates life-long reflective learning, as well as the creation, dissemination, application and translation of knowledge

6 Family Medicine Resident Scholarly Project WHAT? A mandatory project completed over your two years A written report and oral presentation Dedicated leave to work on the project $250 dollars per resident for project costs Done alone or in groups of 2 residents maximum, except for if you do a Literature Review only 1 resident per project.

9 familymedicine.uottawa.ca Examples of projects Medical Education: An assessment of the effectiveness of skills workshop for family physicians to improve competence in doing minor procedures. Quality Improvement: Can an informative slideshow shown in the waiting room improve the uptake of colon cancer screening acceptability among our patients? Literature Review: Identification and review of effective interventions to reduce missed appointments in primary care clinic settings Humanities: Can narrative training help reduce compassion fatigue among family physicians?

Each project is designated as either research or scholarly Decision made collaboratively between the resident, the FMRSP supervisor and the FRMSP program 70-85% projects/year are typically scholarly –6 days of leave 15-30% per year are research –Higher level of rigour expected –Typically requires formal research ethics board review –12 days of leave –Connect early on with the Research arm of Department

27 Road Map - 5 th Step RESEARCH ETHICS BOARD APPROVAL All projects must be ethical! Some projects require Research Ethics Board approval: –When there is significant patient contact or risk to participants –Where the intent is to create “new” knowledge –Where the intervention is tested across multiple sites –Where the intent is to publish your findings Ethical approval process takes a few months A session on Ethics will be held during January Academic Day.
