1 Country, 50 States, 1 Home Content Area: Social Studies Grade Level: Kindergarten Summary: The purpose of this instructional power-point is to help students understand key features of the United States of America and the states of Tennessee, such as the American flag, the state flag, colors, shapes, etc. Learning Objective: Given pictures, students will identify the American flag, Tennessee flag, Tennessee state flower and bird, and national symbols with 100% accuracy; they will also be able to tell key facts about each with 85% accuracy. Common Core Standard: Tennessee State Standard Social Studies- K.16 Identify the following state and national symbols: The American flag and its colors and shapes The Tennessee flag and its colors and shapes The words of the Pledge of Allegiance The Tennessee state flower (Iris) and bird (Mockingbird) The national symbols of the bald eagle, Statue of Liberty, and the White House

What does the Pledge of Allegiance mean? “Pledge:” a pledge is a promise “Allegiance:” allegiance means loyalty “To the Flag:” the flag is the symbol of our country “And to the republic:” a republic is a place where people get to vote and have a say in the choice of leaders and rules “For which it stands:” our country “One nation:” the United States “Under God:” a higher deity blesses and looks favor upon the United States “Indivisible:” not able to be divided “With Liberty:” freedom “And Justice:” fairness “For all:” for everyone
