1 Better Water Maker Mission Statement The customer will be able to access cleaner water with minimal human effort ensuring safer drinking water to third world countries. Final Design We utilized a treadle design to convert mechanical energy to electrical energy. When someone pedals, the one way bearings cause the shaft to rotate thus moving the gears and powering the motors. This energy powers the electrical system where the pump is energized and any extra energy is used to charge the battery. The battery helps to elevate the lulls when someone stops pedaling momentarily and one way bearings were utilized to ensure that the shaft only rotates in the one desired direction. Back up Design Solar panels- show the versatility of the electrical system and require zero human effort Bicycle chain- eliminates the need for the gear therefore elevating the major problem of the teeth wearing Recommendations for Future Work Steel cable, spring/bungee or independent pedal return system Weight reduction would be a great way to improve this design Flywheel to reduce step rate Acknowledgements Thank you to Gerry Garavuso, Bob Bechtold and Kate Chamberlain at B9 Plastics, Mechanical Engineering Machine Shop personnel, The Brinkman Lab, Dr. Elizabeth DeBartolo Engineering Requirement DescriptionMetric Target Value Marginal Value Test Results ER1 Power Generated Power (V/A/W) 12/2.5 /17 +3/-0 Power generated was satisfied by generating ~18.4V/2.9A/53W ER2 Training Time Time (minutes) 20+10 Not formally tested for but observed during Imagine; that the training time for a child to use the system is <20 minutes ER3 Installation Time Time (minutes) 90+/- 30 System could be too complex for people in the third world to assemble properly ER4 Effort Required CO2 L/Min.9-.9 Step rate is at a faster pace than what was designed for; Hand crank requires less effort ER5 Number of Installers Required # People11 or 2 Because of the weight and the complexity of the system, more than 1 installer will be required ER6Unit LifeYears2-0.5 Pulley identified as the failure point of the system ER7Electrical Protection V/A25/3+0/-3 Protects circuitry against a 3A surge in current with buck converter regulating voltage Background The goal of this project is to improve B9 Plastic’s Better Water Maker. The Better Water Maker works by reducing the number of dangerous waterborne microbes via the use of a UV bulb. Two different designs have been tried in the past, with the current version utilizing a hand crank flywheel as a method of mechanical power generation. The major goal is to design the power system so that it generates the required power with less human effort. The current UV treatment process must not be altered. Jason Andrews (EE), Nicolas Reginelli (EE), Tyler Schmidt (ME), Max McMahon (ME), Anna Sementilli (IE), Tyler Burns (ME) Conclusions Electrical concepts have been implemented With the expected usage, the teeth on the gears are going to wear out before the projected end of life of the product. Therefore we are working on our backup design as described below Pressure Plate Sub Assembly Isometric view of the treadle design Uninterruptable power supply accessory Solar Power being used in a third world country Significant Learnings Leave the gears to the professionals - We could have found a standard gear box instead of making a custom gear A simple part may not be the right part - We made the majority of the frame out of angle iron, and modeled those parts as if they were perfect, this caused many issues in assembly that could have been avoided A hour in planning saves at least two hours in fixing Current Hand-Crank version of the Better Water Maker Shown above is the current hand-crank version of the Better Water Maker and to the right is an isometric view of the treadle design.
