Version 2.0 4 Internet provides access to professionals with expertise in various fields –Chemists, engineers, etc. –No geographical limits Students send a question to an expert –Students could e-mail an astronaut asking what it’s like to walk on the moon. Use e-mail, web sites, and video conferencing to facilitate communication Ask-an-Expert Projects

Version 2.0 5 Using Experts in the Classroom To answer specific questions that students have about a topic the class is studying As advisors in large research or net-based projects Eyewitnesses at events or places Expose students to a wide variety of career choices Ready for the Ask-an-Expert Guided Exploration

Version 2.0 6 Telementoring Projects Telementoring Projects are structured e-mail partnerships set up between professionals and business people (mentors) with students (protégés) who share their expertise and experience in a mutually beneficial relationship.

Version 2.0 7 Advantages of Telementoring Over Traditional Mentoring Smaller time commitment for both the mentor & protégé Convenient & consistent weekly communication; eliminates scheduling problems Access to thousands of professionals; no geographic limitations Students and mentors work on long-term projects Ready for the Telementoring Guided Exploration

Keypal Projects: Students communicate electronically with other students from around the world. Similar to traditional Pen Pal Projects. Collaborative and Keypal Projects

Web Sites –Many organizations maintain large databases or lists of Collaborative Projects. –These can be searched using Keywords or browsed by Subject. 2. Educational Listservs –There are Listservs where various Projects and Partners can be found. Finding Collaborative & Keypal Projects

Version 2.0 10 For Collaborative Projects: Use Selection Criteria on Handout 2A to identify Top Notch Projects. Once you identify a Collaborative Project, answer the Questions on Handout 2A. For Keypal Projects: Use Handout 2B to review secrets for a Successful Project. Suggestions for Finding Projects

Version 2.0 11 Goal Find at least One Telecollaborative Project or Resource that you could use in your Classroom. Bookmark the Project(s) to your Yahoo! ® Bookmarks Account. Work in cooperative groups to discuss your selections and choose the best to share with the class. Activity 4: Searching for Telecollaborative Projects and Resources
