3
STRUCTURE OF DNA AND RNA DNA: A double-stranded nucleic acid that contains all the genetic information for cell growth, division, and life functions. Deoxyribose Nucleic Acid Target: I will be able to describe and/or diagram the structures of the DNA and RNA molecules, and contrast DNA and RNA Pg. 73
4
Nucleic Acids: macromolecules that store and transmit genetic information. Types: DNA & RNA Made of nucleotides.
5
Nucleotides: molecules made of a pentose sugar, a phosphate group, and a nitrogen base.
6
Structure of DNA Double Stranded Twisted in a double helix Sugar-Phosphate Backbone Sugar is Deoxyribose Held together by Covalent bonds.
7
4 Nitrogenous Bases – Adenine (A), Thymine (T), Cytosine (C), and Guanine (G) Base Pairs in the middle. A always bonds to T C always bonds to G Held together by hydrogen bonds.
9
Structure of RNA Single Stranded Sugar-Phosphate Backbone Sugar is Ribose Held together by Covalent Bonds One Nitrogen base off of each sugar A, C, G, U (Uracil)

CONTRASTING DNA AND RNA Pg. 72 Diagram the structure of DNA and RNA. - Label the sugar, phosphate, bases, bonds, and circle a nucleotide. Make a T-Chart, label one column DNA and the other RNA. Then draw a picture to show each of the differences between DNA and RNA in the notes. Use a minimum of four colors.
