Lesson 13 Day 2

Read Aloud: Listening Comprehension  Today I will read a Personal Narrative  Personal Narratives Use a first-person point of view Tell the author’s personal point of view A personal narrative is a true story from an author’s life  Listen as I read the rest of the story “Big Ed” Pulaski: Wildland Firefighting Legend. It is about a firefighter who is saved from a dangerous forest fire. One purpose for listening is to find out how the narrator survived the fire.

Discussion What weather conditions increase the danger of wilderness fires?

Focus Skill: Drawing Conclusions An author does not always explain everything in a story. Sometimes you must put together story details with what you know to understand what you are reading. This is called drawing conclusions. Story DetailsWhat I KnowConclusion

Drawing Conclusions Remember: – Use information given in the story – Recall what you already know from real life situations – Put these things together to understand what is happening in the story. Story DetailWhat I knowConclusion A fire engine is sounding its siren as it speeds along the road. Fire engines sound their sirens when there is a fire. There is a fire or other emergency nearby.

Predicting Outcomes: Remember when predicting an outcome: – Look for story clues about what events may happen next in a story or what actions a character may take next. – Think about what you already know from real life and what you know about the character or situation. – Use both the story clues and what you already know to make a prediction about what might happen next in a story.

Let’s Practice  Get out your Reading Workbook and turn to page 75. Lets chorally read this passage and then predict the outcome.

What did you predict would happen next? Story CluesWhat I KnowPrediction Lara lost her backpack. She looked for it at home and school. Rob remembered that Lara had her backpack with her when she was at his house the day before. If you lose something, you should look for it in all the places you were when you last had it with you. Lara will find her backpack at Rob’s house.

Lesson 13 Vocabulary

Something treacherous is dangerous and unpredictable. Which weather is more treacherous – a gentle rainstorm or a harsh blizzard? Why?

Drudgery is hard, unpleasant, boring work. What everyday chore feels like drudgery to you?

If you plunge into something, you rush into it suddenly. What do you do after you plunge into a swimming pool?

Something smoldering is burning slowly from the inside, without flames. If you see a smoldering ember in an old campfire, should you pick it up? Why or why not?

When something has been altered, it has been changed. If you altered the way the furniture in your classroom is arranged, describe what you would be doing.

If you scoffed at something, you spoke about it in a mocking or critical way. If your friend scoffed about a teams chances of winning, how did your friend feel?

If you talk skeptically about something, you express doubt about whether is it true. Would you think skeptically about cows climbing trees or about cows eating grass? Explain.

If something discouraged you, it made you believe that things weren’t going to turn out as you hoped. Would you be discouraged if someone told you that you had won a prize? Why or why not?

Vocabulary Turn to page 342 in your Reading books. Follow along with me as I read the story titled “A Town Transformed”. Be prepared to answer questions about it after I read.

1.Why were the ruins smoldering? 2.Why did the firefighters plunge into the burning building? 3.What kind of treacherous conditions might cause building to be closed? 4.If the townspeople shook their heads skeptically about their task, how did they feel about it? 5.How had the fire altered the downtown area? 6.What made the townspeople feel discouraged? 7.Why might some people have scoffed at the idea of rebuilding? 8. Do you think that the townspeople felt that the drudgery was worth it? Why or why not?
