What’s Your Function? Mrs. Curia – Math for College Readiness
2
Today’s Objective Students will be able to define the following words: Function Relation Students will be able to distinguish between function and relation
3
Essential Questions What is a relation? What is a function? What are the differences between the two?

Observations For each input, how many pieces of candy do you get? For each candy, how many selections will give you that kind of candy? Is there a selection that will give you more than one kind of candy? Is there more than one selection that will give you the same kind of candy?
7
What is a RELATION? A RELATION is… Any set of ordered pairs (x, y) A set of solutions to linear equations Relationship between any two groups of numbers
8
What is a FUNCTION? A FUNCTION can have several definitions: You put exactly 1 thing in, you get exactly 1 thing out A relation that is ONE to ONE (1:1)
9
What does it mean to be “ONE to ONE”? If a relation is ONE to ONE, this means that for every X (value from the first group), there is exactly ONE Y (value from the second group) to match. In the vending machine example, for each possible selection in the vending machine, there was exactly ONE type of candy you would receive.
10
Function vs. Relation Functions: One to one Set of x values Set of y values Relations: Set of x values Set of y values

HOMEWORK Create your own FUNCTION MACHINE Your machine must allow 1 input for every 1 output Your machine must have at least 6 inputs Due: TOMORROW
