Choosing a Theme You should choose a clear theme to base your design on. Anatomy Mechanical Nature

Anatomy Studying the body Cells, skeletons, bones, skulls, skin, limbs etc. Doctors’ tools- eg: plastic gloves, face masks Colour associations- reds, whites, black etc.

Mechanical Materials- metal wire/sheets, cans- tarnished etc. plastics Geometric structure Found objects

Nature Birds, insects, flowers, fungi, trees Studying the delicacy of the shapes and patterns of nature and organic life Using natural materials- wood, paper etc.

Light Design Fit for purpose- fire proof, light in weight, functional- lights well (atmospheric/practical etc) Materials: wire, metal frames, paper, tissue paper, felting(?) Cardboard, book pages etc. Conditions: MUST be structured around the frames- hanging

Sketchbook You will keep all your research and ideas in this You can format your sketchbook to suit you and your Design Your Sketchbook should be busy and full of inspiration, ideas and thought processes

Summer Homework Deadline: Friday 21 st August Research pages for Design Use the sketchbook sheets as inspiration for ideas. MUST be at least two pages of research Include: Explanation of your theme Words that relate to your theme (eg: colours, textures, descriptions) Materials (things you want to collect) Magazine/photo clippings Anything you believe is relevant to your theme. Drawings/Sketches/Doodles Pictures, photocopies, photographs, samples Paragraphs, bullet points, labels, quotes, opinions etc.

Thursday Period Five Research Drawing Continued Using Pinterest to research images in preparation for period six. Period Six Library Computer Suite Research Sheets Open a word document to collect images Must have annotations Must be connected to your theme Two Designers YOU have discovered that inspire your theme

Homework Due in: Thursday 4th September Completed research sheets. Must include: Chosen type of Design (eg: Mask, sculptural jewellery etc) Chosen Designers that inspire your theme Images of patterns/textures/shapes that you can draw from (MUST be photographs, not drawings) If you are doing fashion (including skirts/hoop skirts) proof of sewing ability

Period 5 Create a mind map of your chosen theme. Think about: Colour, textures Words/objects that relate to your theme Materials that could be appropriate

Pinterest Period 6 (Tuesday/Thursday) You will be opening a Pinterest account Researching you chosen theme Looking for Inspiring images Designers that make jewellery/body adornment that could inspire your theme.

Design Brief You will be writing your own design brief. Write it in your sketchbook Mention what your area of Design will be: Sculptural Jewellery/Light Design Think about: Who is your target market? Specific person/celebrity? Is it for a specific event? Charity event based on your theme/red carpet event/runway show inspired by your theme What colours/materials are you going to use? Relate to your theme

Initial Ideas Drawing Clear, pencil drawings of your first ideas of your design. Should have up to six drawings Each must look different from the other but still be based on your theme Keep model simple with NO DEFINING FEATURES Annotations Materials Colours (watercolour/coloured pencils) How it will sit on the face/body

Collecting Materials Most embellishments on your Design piece must be made from scratch. Cardboard, fabric, string, metal sheets, paper, plastics, PVA, wire Almost anything can be spray painted/painted. Hobbycraft, charity shops, DIY Tiger (Glasgow), Mandors etc. Charity Shops- ask for broken, unsellable objects: You cannot add these to your design as they are. These should be taken apart and used as materials eg: old bags, Materials in shops: wire, thread, fabric, metal etc. Recycled: Metals, plastic, polystyrene, paper, CDs,
