Quadratics The short cuts
2
WARNING! These shortcuts only work for equations that have a highest exponent of 2! No more, no less!
3
Ordering Make sure that your equation is in order! The variables should match the format below: ax 2 +bx+c = y Then, note the values of a, b, and c. Reorder the following and note the a, b, and c values: 1.5x 2 +2x+10 = y 2.3x 2 = y -9 +1x 3.x 2 +1 = y+2x 4.+3x-2 = y - 5x 2
4
To find axis of Symmetry (Ex 1) 1.ID your a, b, c values 2.Use the formula below to find the axis of symmetry. 3.Now express it in the proper form: “x = blah-blah”
5
To find axis of Symmetry (Ex 2) 1.ID your a, b, c values 2.Use the formula below to find the axis of symmetry. 3.Now express it in the proper form: “x = blah-blah”
6
To find Vertex (Ex 1)) 1.Find the x – value: 2.Now plug it into the original equation to find your y – value.
7
To find Vertex (Ex 2) 1.ID your a, b, c values 2.Use the formula below to find the x - value. 3.Now plug it into the original equation to find your y – value.
8
To find Roots 1.ID your a, b, c values 2.Use the formula below to find the x – values of the roots. Remember your Order of Operations!!!!! Work under the square root first, then split into to equations, and then solve. Remember that EVERYTHING is above the 2a – Dividing by 2a should be the LAST STEP!

Answer Formats Remember that your answer needs to be formatted correctly! –Vertex = given as a coordinate point! (#, #) –Axis of Symmetry = given as an equation: x = blah –Roots = given as 2 numbers! Use either: x = # or x = # x = {#, #}
