Feb. 1540: Coronado sets out with 300 solders, several hundred natives, a herd of sheep and cattle to find Cibola. Cibola-legendary city of gold. 1,250 mile journey. Coronado Sets Out in Search of Gold

June 1540: reach a Zuni settlement which he thought was Cibola. Zuni were a Puebloan people living in present day New Mexico. Instead of gold they found adobe buildings. Coronado Sets Out in Search of Gold

Coronado refused to give up. –Sent out small search parties. –One group saw the Grand Canyon. –No gold! He decided to head east, met a Pawnee whom they called Turk. A Failed Mission

Turk told them of riches at a place known as Quivira. Turk will serve as the expedition’s guide. A Failed Mission

Moscoso Reaches East Texas Hernando de Soto explores for Cibola to the East. Two years exploring SE U.S. May 1542: dies of a fever. Hernando de Soto

Moscoso Reaches East Texas Moscoso Alvarado assumes command. Finds no treasure, decides to return to Mexico. Led explorers into East Texas where they met the Caddo Indians.

Moscoso Reaches East Texas Returned to the Mississippi River and made boats. 1543: 300 of 600 original explorers reach Mexico. Expedition considered a failure.

Moscoso Explores East Texas Spanish terminated explorations in Texas after failing to find gold. Terminate-to end.
