Texas Mexicans independence (1821) opened the door for settlers & traders to move into the Mexican territories The independence of Texas (1836) many created problems for both the U.S. & Mexico Slavery issue, & the fear of war slowed the annexation process James Polk, an expansionist, finished the process of annexation of Texas December 1845, Texas became a state

The War Why did Polk say we needed to go to war? John Slidell, was offering $30 million for the territory of California & New Mexico Zachary Taylor, moved troops to Texas to claim the Rio Grande River as the true border between the U.S. & Mexico. A small skirmish ensued and gave Polk the evidence to declare war. (May 13, 1846)

California John C. Fremont Fremont Cannon Led settlers into California to cause trouble William B. Ide launched an attack against the Mexicans in Sonoma (NorCal) Easily won, and claimed the area as the “Bear Flag Republic” By 1847, U.S. force controlled most of California & New Mexico

The War in Mexico Taylor & Winfield Scott began marching U.S. forces into Mexico Both took on forces led by Lopez de Santa Ana Many Mexican victories, but not large enough to stop the American forces. Took Mexico City on Sept 14 th, 1847.

Treaty of Guadalupe Hidalgo U.S. wanted to annex most of Mexico Ended up with 2/5 of northern territory (Texas, California, New Mexico) Gadsen Purchase: U.S. bought the remainder of the New Mexico (present day Arizona and Southwestern New Mexico) for $10 million Created large bitterness from many Mexicans.
