1 Do Now  On your Do Now sheet, answer the following questions. You may use your notes from last week.  What are the four different types of symbols used in literature?  Give one example of each type of symbol and explain what it typically stands for.

2 Symbolism, Literal Language and Figurative Language 7 th Grade Language Arts

3 Symbolism  A symbol represents something beyond itself  Often represent an abstract idea  Can anyone explain or give an example of an abstract idea?

4 Literal Language  Understanding words in their usual or most basic sense  For example, if someone said, “It is time to feed the cat and dog,” they are going to feed real pets.

5 Figurative Language  Involves a figure of speech; not literal; metaphorical  For example, if someone says, “It is raining cats and dogs,” they don’t actually mean cats and dogs are falling from the sky.

6 Together…  Complete the animals as symbols chart on page 71 in your SpringBoard book.

7 On your own…  Read the story “The Lion, the Fox and the Stag on page 73.  Complete the two charts on page 73 (After Reading).  On index card, answer the following questions.  What is the lesson learned in this fable? How do you know? Use evidence from the text.
