Do Now On your Do Now sheet, answer the following questions. You may use your notes from last week. What are the four different types of symbols used in literature? Give one example of each type of symbol and explain what it typically stands for.

Symbolism A symbol represents something beyond itself Often represent an abstract idea Can anyone explain or give an example of an abstract idea?

Literal Language Understanding words in their usual or most basic sense For example, if someone said, “It is time to feed the cat and dog,” they are going to feed real pets.

Figurative Language Involves a figure of speech; not literal; metaphorical For example, if someone says, “It is raining cats and dogs,” they don’t actually mean cats and dogs are falling from the sky.

Together… Complete the animals as symbols chart on page 71 in your SpringBoard book.

On your own… Read the story “The Lion, the Fox and the Stag on page 73. Complete the two charts on page 73 (After Reading). On index card, answer the following questions. What is the lesson learned in this fable? How do you know? Use evidence from the text.
