Welcome to Zombie Apocalypse! A GAME ON THE SOCIAL DETERMINANTS OF HEALTH

The Zombie Apocalypse is upon you… Here’s the situation: After a nuclear test went bad in Canada, our neighbors to the north kick-started a zombie apocalypse that has been quickly making its way south. Setting: You are now all residents or visitors to Cut Bank, Montana, near the Canadian border, Glacier National Park, and the Blackfeet Indian Reservation. Cut Bank and the neighboring town of Browning, are small towns where “everyone knows everyone” when it comes to the locals. Tourists are frequent visitors to Cut Bank, who stay in the small town when visiting Glacier National Park. While Cut Bank is a small town, it is well prepared for disasters. All the shelters are zombie proof, and many of the local agencies have stock piled food boxes and other emergency supplies.

Objectives of this Game Agencies/Facilities Assess resources and perceived need Develop a strategic plan / policy to address the needs and requests of the community Assure the needs of the community are met Characters Find shelter, food and in some cases other resources Locate family members when indicated – Note: If your family member is not at the social services department it means the person you are looking for is being played by another student. So ask around and be aware of who you come in to contact with! As much as possible, relay the sentiments of the character when seeking resources or negotiating

Game People “Characters” Game character profiles Looters (looters can cut in line and take one thing from each agency and each player!)

Negotiating and Partnering Some characters’ resources are quite limited Characters can chose to approach other characters to ask to pool resources to purchase food, shelter, and diapers, not medical or social services Characters should read their profile and decide how they would behave and react to potential partnering

Exchange Economic capital - power or status that an individual can attain in capitalist society Social capital - trust and "reciprocity" in a community or between individuals; fundamentally about how people interact with each other Cultural capital – linguistic competencies, manners, preferences, orientations and wisdom

Exchange rates Characters currency ranges from: – 0-10 economic capital chips – 0-10 social capital chips – 0-10 cultural capital chips Agencies and businesses can not provide free services – Decide if agency will modify exchange rate/strategies

TIP! Agencies should work collaboratively when possible. You may refer clients to other agencies if you cannot meet their needs.

Before You Begin… Take about 10-15 minutes to explore your character and your agency’s role(s). – For those working with an agency/business create a brief plan to deal with emergency situations. Talk to those representing other agencies to determine a referral system. – For those playing the part of specific people think about how your character: Will use limited resources- Is there an order in which you acquire resources, find family members? Will react to other characters – in attempts to partner or when approached to partner
