Stock Market 101 In the United States stocks are listed under three trading companies: – New York Stock Exchange – Amex – NASDAQ All U.S. stocks combined are thought to be worth $100 trillion.

New York Stock Exchange Formed in 1792 on Wall Street in New York City, NY Largest stock market in the world by volume.

NASDAQ National Association of Securities Dealers Automated Quotations system. Founded in 1971 Largest stock market in the world by number of shares.

Amex Formed in 1882 in New York City. Small to mid-sized stocks traded on the Amex today. Birthplace of stock hand signals. Smallest of the three large US stock exchanges.

What are stocks? Stocks are a source for a company to raise money. Every Many people use the stock market for long term and short term investing. Can be a risky investment, but has paid off for some.

Dow Jones Industrial Average Stock market index first published by Charles Dow in the Wall Street Journal in 1896. An index is a collection of stocks that generally show the overall health of the market (and sometimes the economy). Collection of 30 very elite American companies.

S&P 500 Standard and Poor’s 500 An index containing 500 elite companies. Analysts use the S&P to help gauge how the economy is doing. The S&P is the second most watched index in the United States behind the Dow Jones.
