listening guide bad, smooth criminal, beat it
19
BAD o 0:00-0:15 – Starts with brass instruments and goes into a nice blend with a guitar, keyboard instrument and the drums. o 2:01-2:15 – The vocals again start to build up towards the chorus. The “whip” affect comes back, as well as the brass instruments and back— up singers. o 4:01-End – Everything continues until the very end when the music abruptly stops and the lead vocals almost asks the listener the question “who’s bad?”.
20
SMOOTH CRIMINAL o 0:00-0:15 – There are some sudden sounds as the song starts and creepy background music, then we hear a signature yell from the lead vocalist. o 2:46-3:00 – The voice over end and the instruments take over again. The keyboards, guitars and drums are very relevant as well as other sound affects. o 3:31-3:45 – The voices finish and the music takes over. The guitar was what I heard the most of at this point. There were some screams that were in the background at times.
21
BEAT IT 0:00-0:15 – The song starts off with a big repeating sound, almost like the same chord of a guitar was being played repeatedly, and then drums jump in and add a cool beat. 2:16-2:30 – As the chorus continues the vocals go into an almost echo technique and the chord from the beginning of the song reappears. o 3:16-4:17 – The vocals come back strong and jump right back into the chorus lyrics, and stay there the rest of the song. The drums and guitar stay relevant throughout the remainder of the song as well.
