1.5 The Distributive Property For any numbers a, b, and c, a(b + c) = ab + ac (b + c)a = ba + ca a(b – c)=ab – ac (b – c)a = ba – ca For example: 3(2 + 5) = 3(2) + 3(5) 3(7) = 6 + 15 21 = 21

Example #1 Rewrite 8(10 + 4) using the distributive property. Then evaluate. 8(10) + 8(4)Distributive property 80 + 32Multiply 112Add 1. Rewrite 9(5 + 1) using the distributive property. Then evaluate. 2. Rewrite 3(11 – 8) using the distributive property. Then evaluate. 1. = 54 2. = 9

Example #2: 15(99) 15(100 – 1) 15(100) – 15(1) 1500 – 15 1485 Beats the long way of multiplying

Simplifying Expressions Like Terms: terms with the same variable and same exponent Combining like terms: combining like terms by adding or subtracting the coefficients (the numbers in front of the variable(s)). 3s + 4t – 5s 3s – 5s = -2s but the 4t is not a ‘like term’ with the others so… The simplified expression is -2s + 4t Only terms with the same variable and exponent can be put together.
