4-4 Learning to Learn Learning to Live Honorably and The Benefits which Come With It
2
FOR TRAINING USE ONLY Training Objective Task: Recognize the benefits of living Honorably both at The Citadel and after Condition: Convey material through the Company Honor Rep to 4 th classmen cadets Standard: Answer a series of questions pertaining to material presented in this lesson 2
3
FOR TRAINING USE ONLY Reflect Think about some of the differences you have seen between High School and The Citadel in regards to trust. How does your level of trust with your peers here compare with that of your peers in high school? Provide examples in which you trust someone here that you might not trust someone outside of the gates. – Example: If someone borrows a uniform item, your expect them to give it back to you, whereas in high school there was a good chance of that item not returning 3
4
FOR TRAINING USE ONLY More Examples 1.Being paid back – i.e. if you loan your friend money 2.Class Roll Call – i.e. “He’s in the bathroom” – “He’s in the infirmary” – “She’s on special leave” 3.Not cheating on Take Home Exams 4.Improper Class Absence – i.e. “Sir/Ma’am I was here that day” 4 1.Allows you and your friend to loan money and help each other out without causing problems 2.Allows the teacher to trust the students and not need to double check on the location of the absent student 3.Allows for students to take exams outside of the classroom so students can be untimed and comfortable 4.Allows students to not receive punishments if they were improperly pulled for being late/absent
5
FOR TRAINING USE ONLY 5 Trust Allows each of these examples to occur based solely on your word and reliance on one another
6
FOR TRAINING USE ONLY Benefits to Living Honorably Without an honorable lifestyle, you cannot trust your peers If you cannot trust your peers, you cannot take their word If you cannot take their word, you have to double check everything they do If you have to double check, you waste time and build an inauthentic relationship 6
7
FOR TRAINING USE ONLY Why are we Different? Here at The Citadel, we learn to live Honorable Lifestyles Outside of the gates, universities do not live under such strict Honor Standards This is why Citadel cadets and graduates are well respected among their peers An employer/leader/friend knows a Citadel cadet lives honorably This allows for the employer/leader/friend to have trust in the Citadel cadet 7
8
FOR TRAINING USE ONLY Consider this… A Job Training Program allows for an employee to learn how to do their job The Citadel is a Leadership Program that allows for a cadet to learn how to lead upon graduation – Honor plays into Leadership – As you learn to lead, you will learn to live honorably You will be faced with tough decisions, always choose Honor It may be tough, but keep in mind the benefits of living honorably 8
9
FOR TRAINING USE ONLY Learning to Live Honorably Overall you will find your own path to guide you to live honorably 1.Hold yourself and your classmates accountable – Establish trust that you will maintain the standard and keep your peers in line, do not tolerate subpar performances 2.Never lie, cheat, or steal…whether someone is watching or not 3.Gain a reputation both inside and outside the gates – Wherever you are, hold your values true to yourself and stay honorable 9
10
FOR TRAINING USE ONLY Learning to Live Honorably 4.Set goals – Decide what rank you want next year, what job you want in the future, etc… – Focus your efforts to meet your goals, and do not risk losing these goals by cutting corners along the way 5.Help yourself – Execute time management – Always stay on top of your work, both military and academic – Failure to do so causes you to put yourself in tight situations which lead to people lying/cheating/stealing 10
11
FOR TRAINING USE ONLY Review What are some benefits to living honorably while at The Citadel? What are some benefits to living honorably after The Citadel? How is a Job Training Program like The Citadel? What are some ways to help you Learn to Live Honorably? 11
12
FOR TRAINING USE ONLY Think Deeper How can living honorably affect your friendships? Why should you live under an Honor Code? Why are there no second chances with the Honor Code? How have you seen Honor affect your short time as a cadet? How can living honorably affect your goals? 12
13
FOR TRAINING USE ONLY Activity In small groups with the people around you, discuss 3 tough decisions you could face in the future as a cadet. Explain what these tough decisions are and what might happen if you 1.Lie/Cheat/Steal to gain something 2.Choose not to Lie/Cheat/Steal to gain something What are the immediate implications of your actions? What are the long term implications of your actions? When every group is finished, provide your answers to the class 13
