2. Pre-School (scuola materna) For children between three and five They stay at school eight hours, between 8.30 and 4.30 p.m. It is NOT compulsory It lasts three years School starts on 1st September and ends on 30th June Here they play with the other children They start learning to write and to read They learn a foreign language There are no exams at the end

3. Elementary school (scuola primaria) For children between six and eleven School usually starts around 10th September and ends on 10th June Its compulsory and lasts five years Children go to school in the morning, from eight to one p.m. Children stay at school for 27 hours per week, plus three optional hours (subjects vary from school to school) In some schools they stay there in the afternoon, too: one or two afternoons a week.
