Pre-School (scuola materna) For children between three and five They stay at school eight hours, between 8.30 and 4.30 p.m. It is NOT compulsory It lasts three years School starts on 1st September and ends on 30th June Here they play with the other children They start learning to write and to read They learn a foreign language There are no exams at the end

Elementary school (scuola primaria) For children between six and eleven School usually starts around 10th September and ends on 10th June Its compulsory and lasts five years Children go to school in the morning, from eight to one p.m. Children stay at school for 27 hours per week, plus three optional hours (subjects vary from school to school) In some schools they stay there in the afternoon, too: one or two afternoons a week. Junior school (scuola secondaria di I grado) For children between eleven and fourteen It usually starts around 10th September and ends on 10th June Its compulsory and lasts three years Students stay at school for 27 hours per week, plus six optional hours (subjects vary from school to school) There is an exam at the end Subjects Italian Maths Science English French History Geography Physical Education Art and Design Music Education Religion

High School (liceo or istituto tecnico) For students between fourteen and nineteen It usually starts around 10th September and ends on 10th June, then there is the state exam Its compulsory until the age of fifteen It lasts five years There is a state exam at the end Common Subjects Italian Maths English Biology History Geography Physical Education Art and Design Religion Subjects which change in relation to the kind of school Latin Physics Chemistry Philosophy French (or other foreign languages)
