Arriving at school: At the morning bell, the children are to line up under the Cola in their classes. Children must ensure that they been to the toilet and washed their hands before lining up. The Northern playground is out of bounds before school. No child is permitted to enter a classroom without a teacher. Please keep the path way clear for K-2 students to walk across the road. It is very congested.

Early leave notes need to be completed if your child leaves the school before 3:20pm. Medication and instructions for dosage must be given to the office and administered by the ladies in the office. Packing Lunches: Please ensure lunch orders have your child’s name and class written on them with money attached. We promote healthy eating at O.P.S so please pack healthy options for lunch and fruitbreak. Birthdays: Children are welcome to bring in cakes or treats to celebrate their birthday. If you wish to do so, please make sure they are pre-cut or in individual portions like cupcakes, as these can be easily distributed and there are no knives on the premises. There are 26 children in 2W-but don’t forget one for me! ;-) Please keep in mind that Oatley Public School is a nut free zone. Food at School:

School Uniform: The school hat is part of the school uniform and must be worn on the playground at all times. No hat = no play. Please teach your child to tie up their own shoe laces to promote self reliance and confidence.

Homework HOMEWORK TASKS CONTRIBUTE TO THE WHOLE SCHOOL AWARDS SYSTEM. IF YOUR CHILD DOES NOT COMPLETE THEIR HOMEWORK IT WILL BE RECORDED AND WILL IMPACT THEIR ABILITY TO RECEIVE A HOMEWORK AWARD & THEREFORE IMPACTS THEIR CHANGES AT RECEIVING ASSISTANT PRINCIPALS, PRINCIPALS AWARDS & THE SCHOOL MEDAL. Homework helps establish the habits of study, concentration and discipline. Parents also have the opportunity to see their child progress. Homework is given out on a Friday and brought back on a Thursday. We mark our maths homework as a class under my supervision. Oral reading is recommended for 10-15 minutes per night and other homework tasks for approx 20 minutes.
11
Homework Reading at least 3 times per week – fill out Home Reading diary Spelling (look, say, cover, write, check nightly) Spelling grid activity (one per week) Maths text book – double page per week Home readers – change regularly News – fortnightly. (even weeks) See note.
12
Reading!!! Read with your child every night. It is a great idea to read the same book for more than one day. This promotes sightword recognition and repetition helps to promote fluency and understanding of a text. Model ‘sounding out’ the words and use thinking out loud strategies e.g. I know that it starts with a ‘s’ sound and ends with a ‘t’ sound... Look at the punctuation – have your child point to a capital letter, full stop, question mark etc. Talk about the book – make predictions, ask what happened in the beginning, middle and end of the story. Who was your favourite character and why???
13
Take an interest in your child’s homework. Support your child in setting aside time each day for homework. Monitor homework by ensuring all tasks are completed. Communicate with teachers any concerns you have. Encourage your children to read and take and interest in current events. Alert the school of any change in circumstances that may affect your child and their ability to complete homework. How can you help with homework?
14
Parent Helpers: I would love some help in the classroom with Reading Groups. Reading Groups with parent helpers will begin in Term 2. Please remember that when you volunteer to help in the classroom, you act with discretion and confidentiality. A child’s individual progress and classroom behaviour should not be discussed with any other parents. This is a topic for the classroom teacher and an individual child’s parents to discuss. Before committing yourself to helping in the classroom, we ask parents to sign a child protection declaration, sign on and off at the visitors register and wear a visitors badge, and come without younger children when helping.
15
Other Whole School Programs and their Teachers: Italian Program – Signora Johnstone Library – Mrs ???? will take the children for their Library lesson. In Year 2 we will be covering the Premiers Reading Challenge. Students will need to bring a library bag in order to borrow books. Scripture - Scripture takes place every Wednesday at 9:50am – 10:20am.
16
Whole School Discipline System: The whole school uses a behaviour thermometer. This ensures that students are aware of the expectations of their behaviour and the consequences if they make the wrong choice. It also ensures consistent Teacher judgement in the playground and in individual classrooms. If two yellow cards are given to a child in one day = automatic red card If two red cards are given to a student within one term = Parents will be notified. There is a reflection classroom used once a week. In this classroom students who have consistently made the wrong choice will spend some of their lunch time thinking and writing about their actions. They will also discuss alternative actions if the samesituation should arise in the future.
17
Rewards System: Term 1 x2 Homework Awards (5 weeks of English and Mathematics activities completed) x2 Merit Awards = AP Award Term 2 x2 Homework Awards (5 weeks of English and Mathematics activities completed) x2 Merit Awards = AP Award Term 3 x2 Homework Awards (5 weeks of English and Mathematics activities completed) x2 Merit Awards = Principals Award (x2 AP and 4 Merits To Office) Term 4 x2 Homework Awards (5 weeks of English and Mathematics activities completed) x2 Merit Awards = School Medallion (4 Merits To Office- they will have record)

2C’s Class Guidelines: Our classroom guidelines align with the School’s Values System and were created by the children. We are kind and caring friends We always do the 5L’s (Look, Listen, Lips closed, Legs crossed and hands in Laps) We are helpful and keep our classroom clean and tidy We are brave and like a challenge We put our hand up to talk We sit still and don’t talk out of turn on the carpet-we do the 5L’s! We follow our school values We line up quietly in two straight lines when entering the classroom

2C’s Behaviour Management Systems: Consequences: Time to and If I am not following our classroom guidelines the following will happen: First verbal warning Name on the sad face on the board I loose a Dojo point I get a yellow card and have to go to Mrs Hewitt for time out. I will also have to go to Reflection Room at lunch time with Mrs Edwards or Mrs Hunter. Remember that my behaviour can always improve and my name can be rubbed off the sad face.

Concerns I am more than happy to discuss any areas of concern that you have for your child. However due to commitments before and after school an appointment is usually required. * Please be mindful when planning your child’s birthday parties as it can be a sensitive situation in the classroom when not all students are invited.
22
* Long service leave- beginning of Term 3 for 4 weeks and 2 days. Mrs Hunter will be interviewing candidates to find the teacher best suited to taking over 2C for the time I will be on LSL. A full handover will take place closer to the date of my leave..
23
I look forward to working with you and your child for a productive year at school. Welcome to 2C!
