Premiere is not easy, but it is rewarding.
2
Work quality ◦ Many good ◦ Mostly average ◦ Some great! (Hall of Fame) Music Choice ◦ Some choices were better than others. We Didn’t Start The Fire Johnny B. Goode
3
A lot of time spent in class repeating instructions from the rubric ◦ How do I export? ◦ What preset? ◦ How many images do I need? ◦ What size do they need to be? Going forward, I am trying to make my rubrics as clear as possible, but the answers to a lot of common questions were in the rubric. Take responsibility for your project and read it.
4
Beliefs ◦ Belief that this class is one you can blow off. ◦ Belief that you can complete a project two days before it’s due. ◦ Belief that you can “wing it” and finish on time. ◦ Belief that I won’t watch the whole video or listen for issues. ◦ Belief that you can skip class and still pass. It’s time to change your beliefs and expectations. If you’re not putting your whole butt into it, it’s going to be a bad time.
5
The number one problem is time. ◦ You had more than enough time, believe it or not. You need to be managing your time better. ◦ 40 pictures is easy to obtain when you know your plan. You need to estimate how much time it’s going to take ◦ And adjust accordingly. You need to decide on a song quickly and confidently ◦ Too many of you struggled to find the perfect song.
6
Oh boy. Understanding the folder system ◦ What are the folders? What are they for? ◦ Moving files and organization Always assume ◦ That it’s going to the wrong place when you save. Premiere is not a perfect system but your issues make sense. ◦ Assets should already be determined ◦ Renaming folders? ◦ Marking out beats and lyrics
7
Some of you didn’t like the project, or care. ◦ This is evident in your tiny, mis-sized pictures Some of you got tired of the song ◦ This resulted in a tired second half of the song Some of you had awesome beats ◦ And ignored them as “too hard” Respect the project, STRIVE FOR QUALITY. ◦ It’s tough, but it’s worth it. Quality is king, remember that. ◦ Soon it will be videos of you, not pictures of cats. ◦ You’re dealing with attention spans of 5-8 seconds now, keep it looking good and interesting
8
Premiere is not child’s play. If you approached Photoshop like a hippie in a field, prancing about barefoot where-ever the wind took you, that’s fine. Maybe it worked for you. Video editing requires rigorous planning. ◦ Not Premiere in particular, but the mindset for the job. ◦ Organization, planning, resources BEFORE the job starts.
9
What is the project scope? ◦ What is needed, how do we accomplish the task. What are the client’s goals? ◦ Mr. Buck wants a picture-based video that moves to the beats, lyrics, or both. What is needed? ◦ We need a song and pictures. Where do I get the song? ◦ Convert2mp3.net, or another MP3 service What pictures work with “He-Man HEYEAYEAYEAYEA”? ◦ Cartoons and other outrageously flamboyant pictures
10
Listen to the song ◦ How does the song change over time? ◦ Is it too fast, too slow? ◦ Can I catch those beats? Or will it be very difficult? ◦ How long is the song? ◦ How many choruses? Find the pictures ◦ Where? ◦ What size? ◦ How many?
11
You must use this mindset at all times. We’re moving into real video now, so it becomes: ◦ What is the location setting? ◦ How many actors are needed in the shot? ◦ Do you need any important props in the shot? ◦ What type of shot (close-up, wide-shot, establishing shot, and so on) do you need? ◦ What is the shot's angle (where the camera is shooting from)? Is it a high angle? A low angle? Canted? ◦ Do any actors or need to move within a frame, and what is the direction of that action? Follow the rules of leadroom or abuse it for psychological effect? ◦ Do you need any camera movement to add motion to this shot? In other words, does the camera follow the actor in the shot, and in what direction? ◦ Does this video need graphic overlays made in Photoshop?
12
Use an outline: First lyrics (20 pics) ◦ Pictures of women being yelled at by men First Chorus (10 pics) ◦ Women rising up against men ◦ Roaring animals Second lyrics (20 pics) ◦ Warrior women, etc.
13
Or, create a storyboard
14
Remember, a good video will tell a story. It will have a beginning, middle, and end. It will have a message or point. It will be entertaining to watch and hold our attention. It will be the hardest thing in the world to make. ◦ But it will be worth it.
