Welcome to Exploring Technology! Have a seat anywhere (for now) Take out a fresh sheet of paper Write your definition of technology and give three examples. Today: I will explain my plans for you this quarter and outline my expectations. You will complete an online pre-test in the main computer lab tomorrow. “I think technology is ___________________. Some examples are____________________ 1/25/11
2
Technology is: Applying knowledge, tools, and skills to solve problems and extend human capabilities.
3
Categorizing Technology Systems Based on: –What it does –Who it helps –Where it is used –When it was developed Paleolithic Age – 500,000 BC to 10,000 BC Mesolithic Age - 10,000 BC to 4,000 BC Neolithic Age 4,000 BC to 2,300 BC 9/2 Copy (words only)
4
2/1 Copy and give another example The use of technology affects our safety. Improved SafetyReduced Safety Ex. Bike HelmetEx. Paint with lead in it (your example)
5
11/15 Copy and give another example Different technologies involve different sets of processes. List processes used in Transportation Data ProcessingConstruction Storing Retrieving Communicating Evaluating Designing Developing Producing Marketing Managing
6
1/28 Copy Pictorial Drawings are 3D images used to share information about a real or imagined object. Isometric means “equal measure”
7
Technology Human innovation in action –Applies problem-solving strategies to solve real-world problems –Focus is on the human-made world –Uses the design process to develop solutions –Knowledge and skills deal with creating, using, managing, and assessing technology.
8
Science The study of the natural world –Applies methods of inquiry to answer questions –Focus primarily on the natural world –Uses the scientific method to propose explanations –Focus is on finding out “Why…?”
9
Engineering A profession that combines science, math, and technology to solve practical problems. –Solutions gained both by study, experience, and practice –Requires both judgment and creativity –Solutions are evaluated using predictive analysis before construction of a product or system begins.
10
Technology is neither good nor bad! Decisions about the use of products and systems can result in desirable and undesirable consequences. Outcomes of technology use is sometimes unexpected.
11
The use of technology affects humans in various ways: Safety Comfort Choices Attitudes about use
12
Let’s look at a system using this Systems Model Resources CapitalTime InformationEnergy MaterialsPeople Tools and Machines InputProcessOutput Feedback How did this system match the parts in our model?
13
Impacts of technology can be classified as: –Positive or negative –Expected or unexpected Impacts
14
Technological Impacts of: Expected Unexpected + - Creates order Improves Safety Cost to Taxpayers Slows you down Red-light runners Helps pedestrians cross Lower insurance costs?
15
Create your own technology impacts chart Chose one of the following items: –Telescope –Video games –Automobile –Soda machine –Cigarettes –Disposable diapers –Fireworks –Graphing Calculator Each person at a table must be doing their own topic! Feel free to help each other out.
16
Science, Technology, and Engineering On the back of your paper, write these three words leaving about 8 lines between each. You already have the definition of technology on the front of your paper. Use a textbook or dictionary to find a definition for the other two terms.
