1 Jonathan Edwards “Sinners in the Hands of an Angry God”

2 Jonathan Edwards (1703-1758) Colonial preacher who wrote persuasive literature Family was devoutly Puritan Spoke Latin, Greek and Hebrew. He entered Yale at age 13 and graduated as valedictorian at 17. Earned Masters in theology.

3 Jonathan Edwards… 1729 – became pastor at Northampton Church One of the leaders of the “Great Awakening.” (A religious revival that swept the colonies in the 1730’s and 1740’s.)

4 Jonathan Edwards… 1750 – dismissed from position when members of congregation became displeased with his conservative beliefs 1757 – took position as President of College of New Jersey (now Princeton), and died shortly thereafter.

5 Death and Legacy Died of fever following inoculation for smallpox on March 22, 1758. Buried in the President's Lot in the Princeton cemetery beside his son-in-law, Aaron Burr. Edwards had three sons and eight daughters. The three sons were graduates of Princeton. Three daughters married Yale graduates; one was Burr; another was Timothy Dwight, forebear of three Yale presidents.

6 Jonathan Edwards… The particularly fiery sermon, “Sinners in the Hands of An Angry God,” was delivered in 1741, and caused mass hysteria in the congregation of the church.
