1 Tone and Mood in Literature The difference between what you read and how you feel

2 TONE Tone in literature tells us how the author thinks about his or her subject. The author's style conveys the tone in literature. Tone is the author's attitude toward story and readers.

3 Mood Mood is the emotions that you feel while you are reading. Some literature makes you feel sad, others joyful, others angry, etc. Authors use descriptive adjectives to set the “mood” and create an atmosphere (or a picture in your mind.) – For example: Horror films: you would want to use a lot of chilling/suspense-type adjectives Romance: you would want to use descriptive, fiery, passionate adjectives

7 Descriptive Details Read the following passage. Write down excellent tone words/phrases used by the author. Then write 2 sentences describing the mood of the scene.

8 Now write 4-6 sentences describing this scene. Make sure to use plenty of amazing adjectives.
