American Indian Country Most Amer. Indians lived west of the Mississippi River Americans & the U.S. government continued to try to gain additional Indian land after the Civil War Many Indians agreed to live on reservations where they felt safe and land was protected

Bureau of Indian Affairs The BIA was the agency responsible for managing American Indian issues The BIA encouraged and sometimes forced Indians to move to reservations Promised supplies were sometimes never granted and reservation land was reduced

George A. Custer U.S. General Led an attack on the Sioux Indians with 600 tired Army soldiers. The Sioux Indians killed all of his men within one hour (1876) The shock of this defeat led the U.S. to increase relocation of Indians to reservations
