Chapter 6 Review
2
The Periodic Table Groups go up and down Periods go left to right Representative elements are found in groups 1A- 8A All other groups are transition elements
3
Element Classification Metals- shiny, solid at room temperature, good conductors of electricity Found on the left side of the periodic table Semi-metals- have characteristics of both metals and non-metals are located by the dark line of the periodic table.
4
Non-metals- gases or brittle dull-looking solids and poor conductors of electricity. Located on the right side of the periodic table.
5
Group Classification Group 1A-Alkali Metals Group 2A- Alkaline Earth metals Group 7A- Halogens Group 8A- Noble gases Elements in the same group have similar properties.
6
Periodic Trends Atomic Radius- the size of the element. Increases down and to the left.
7
Periodic Trends Ionization Energy-the energy required to remove an electron. Electronegativity- the energy required to attract an electron. Both increase up and to the right.
8
Perioidic Trend Ionic Radius-a positive or negatively charged atoms. Positive (cation) lose an electron and small Negative (anion) gain an electron and large
9
Valence Electrons Group number equals the number of valence electrons. Valence electrons are located on the outermost energy level. Valence electrons are the ones involved in bonding.
