CLASS Metadata and Remote Sensing Extensions CLASS Data Provider’s Conference September 2005 Anna Milan, Anna.Milan@noaa.govAnna.Milan@noaa.gov Ted.Habermann, Ted.Habermann@noaa.govTed.Habermann@noaa.gov
2
General overview of metadata and CLASS Details of the Remote Sensing Extensions
3
Metadata Team Data Provider Direct Users Archive Metadata Manager Data Manager Designated Users FGDC Standard Metadata Content with Remote Sensing Extensions FGDC Standard Metadata Content with Remote Sensing Extensions
4
Subject – Standard metadata vs disparate resources
5
Standard Metadata Standardized metadata is critical to preserving the usefulness of data over time Standards provide a common set of terms Ensure usability of data for communities that know and understand the standards Enables communities to archive, search and access information easily
6
From Disparate Resources to Standardized Content Disparate resources of metadata are available for NESDIS missions, satellites, sensors, and products CLASS metadata gathers existing resources and organizes the information in a standard way
7
Different Resources Have Different… Organization of Information Terminology Intentions Content Resource Locations
8
Standardized Metadata From Distinct and Different Resources to Standardized Content In One Location White Papers Websites Data Providers Books User’s Guides
9
Existing Satellite Metadata Systems NOAA Polar Orbiter User’s Guides The classic source for information about NOAA's satellites, the instruments they carry, and the data that are available from those instruments http://www2.ncdc.noaa.gov/docs/podug/ NESDIS Satellite Product Database A database that relates satellites, instruments, products, POPs and scientific disciplines http://satprod.osd.noaa.gov/satprod/controlcenter.cfm Level 1B Notices http://www.osdpd.noaa.gov/PSB/PPP/notices/notices.html
10
Granule Level Metadata Systems CLASS Inventory/File System Granule level metadata for all CLASS data - except IPD and Pathfinder Products which are stored in the Informix database DMSP The DMSP archive at NGDC stores granule level metadata ETL TOVS Orbit Summaries A time series of simple statistics for each channel and orbit of TOVS that provides long-term quality information This is a granule level system Level 1B File Headers Granule level information for satellite data.

Metadata and CLASS
12
32 Collection Level Metadata Records Published
13
CLASS is leading… Only provider of FGDC compliant metadata with RSE Only organization in NESDIS populating website content directly from FGDC metadata records
14
Intro to RSE
15
Remote Sensing Extensions (RSE) Define content standards for metadata that describe data obtained from remote sensing activities RSE are directly applicable to NOAA satellite products Fulfill a need that was not addressed by the original FGDC metadata content standards Content Standard for Digital Geospatial Metadata – Extensions for Remote Sensing Metadata Published in 2002

Platform and Mission Info
34
Platform and Mission Information Mission is the program of which the data collection was a part of N-POES Platform is where measurements that produced the data are from satellites, boats, planes Mission Name: Description: Mission Start Date: History: Significant Event: Mission End Date:
