“Once More to the Lake” Objective: To read multiple texts and plan for a Socratic Seminar by questioning the texts and drawing thematic similarities to create a context for high- level student lead discussions

Quickwrite Sometimes we revisit childhood places, toys, or people. What is it like when you go back to these places? How do you feel? Déjà vu is when you feel like you are experiencing an event for a second time. Have you ever felt like you have already been here once before or already done something once before. How does this feel?

Socratic Seminar Big Picture or Focus for Discussion “Once More to the Lake” and “The Door” both reveal an epiphany experienced by the author or narrator. What is that realization? What rhetorical techniques were implemented and what was the effect? Epiphany: – a moment in which you suddenly see or understand something in a new or very clear way

Questions One of the most important aspects of Socratic Seminar is the questions you ask. Good questions make for good discussion Think about questions from the AP exam Question should be higher-level and encourage students to make connections Open-ended questions: – What would happen if.. – What can be inferred about… – What is the effect of…

Paragraphs 1-4 Read “Once More to Lake” as a class and take notes on the planning sheet Open-ended questions First words of text and paragraph Connections to Rhetorical Terms and the Effect on the Reader – Metaphor, Analogy, Diction, Imagery, Details, Organization

Socratic Seminar Two groups join together Go around the group and everyone state one of your level 2 or 3 questions Agree as a group which questions you would like to address first Remember to come back to the text

Paraphrase and be respectful – While you believe…have you considered… – Your perspective is… – Despite… – I reject…because – I’m aware that… – Furthermore… or However… – Corresponding with… – Contradictory to…

Debrief and Reflections What was your contribution to the discussion? What ideas did you agree/disagree with? What do you wish you had done differently during the discussion? Or what do you wish you could have added? What is your overall evaluation of the seminar?
