Earth System Science System: An organized group of related objects or components that interact to create a whole
3
Systems can be BIG or small.
4
Geoscience Geoscience looks at Earth as a system of interacting spheres. Spheres are the storehouse for all matter. Geosphere (litho) Hydrosphere Atmosphere Biosphere
5
Matter & Energy Get transferred through spheres. Cycles (water cycle, carbon cycle, etc) map out this energy and matter transfer
6
Closed & Open Systems Closed: Energy can be exchanged with surroundings, but matter cannot. Open: Energy AND matter can be exchanged w/ surroundings. Example: Biospheres Energy in = visible light Energy out = heat (infra red) Matter - all contained w/in dome Example: Aquarium or lake Energy in = visible light Energy out = heat (infra red) Matter - IS EXCHANGED with surroundings
7
Use this diagram of the carbon cycle to describe an interaction of carbon between the… a.atmosphere & geosphere b.atmosphere and hydrosphere c.biosphere and atmosphere d.Biosphere and hydrosphere Give an example of how energy is interacts in this system.
8
Earth is almost a CLOSED system. The individual spheres that make up the Earth system are OPEN systems. Explain the following statements. Provide specific examples to illustrate your point.
9
Geo(litho)sphere -Mostly solid -Includes E.’s interior and surface -Volcanism brings matter from interior to surface and atmosphere.
10
Atmosphere – gas layer surrounding the planet. Provides air to breathe and protection…
11
Hydrosphere – All water on planet (except for that in the atmosphere) - 71% of planet surface is water -Most is salt water (97%); Freshwater (3%): glaciers, ground, rivers, lakes, streams.
12
Biosphere All organisms on Earth and their environments. Includes matter that is decomposing.
13
Environmental Science – the study of interactions of organisms and their surroundings.
14
Identify the what represents each sphere? Hydrosphere Geosphere Atmosphere Biosphere Can you inter-relate the spheres?
