Bid to hold World Fair Russia’s leave gives Canada world fair bid Canadian gov’t applied at the International Exhibits Bureau in Paris for rights to hold World Fair. Moscow originally won the rights to host fair of 67; Dropped out when realized expenses involved. Brussels in 1958 – Canada was given right to host fair. Mayor Sarto Fournier created resolution to have Montreal host fair John Diefenbaker endorsed bid in 1960. Federal gov’t pledged $20 million 1962 – Montreal given hosting rights.

Construction of the Expo From plans to finish August 13, 1963 building of the expo began. Used earth from subway to build island. Built two bridges leading to islands – Concordia Bridge, and Bridge of Isles. Construction was finished in 1966, with exhibits finished in winter 1966-1967

Pavilions Themes and Buildings Theme of World Fair was “Man and his World” 62 countries participated in pavilions eight major national pavilions; five Canadian regional pavilions; one industrial, and one thematic.
