Main Changes - Overview There will no longer be any "extended papers" (equivalent to current Level 6 papers) Arithmetic paper – explicit teaching of arithmetic The reporting will change. As the use of levels (such as 2a, 3b, 4c) has been discontinued, they will now be using a scaled scoring system to standardise the results Times tables x 12 by the end of Year 4 Roman Numerals

Yr 1 Changes to the Maths Curriculum – at a glance What’s been added? Counting and writing numerals to 100 Write numbers in words up to 20 Number bonds secured to 20 Use of vocabulary such as equal, more than, less than, fewer etc

Yr 2 Changes to the Maths Curriculum – at a glance What’s been added? Solving problems with subtraction Finding / writing fractions of quantities (and lengths) Adding two 2-digit numbers Adding three 1-digit numbers Demonstrating commutativity of addition & multiplication e.g. 5x2=10 2x5=10 Describing properties of shape (e.g. edges, vertices) Measuring temperature in °C Tell time to the nearest 5 minutes Making comparisons using = symbols Recognise £ p symbols and solve simple money problems

Assessments

The new National Curriculum will be assessed for the first time in May 2016. Before then, tests must first be trialled in schools, going through a rigorous development process, looking at different question types, including the variation of possible answers before they go live in May 2016.

Key Features of the Mathematics tests From 2016, questions in the mathematics National Curriculum tests will be linked to specific areas of the new curriculum. At key stages 1 & 2, the new tests for mathematics will have two components. The first is an arithmetic paper testing fluency through calculation. The second assesses the ability to reason and apply mathematics.

Yr 3 Changes to the Maths Curriculum – at a glance What’s been added? Adding tens or hundreds to 3-digit numbers Formal written methods for addition/subtraction 8 times table replaces 6 times tables Counting in tenths Comparing, ordering, adding & subtracting fractions with common denominators Identifying angles larger than/smaller than right angles Identify horizontal, vertical, parallel and perpendicular lines Tell time to the nearest minute, including 24 hour clock and Roman numerals Know the number of seconds in a minute and the number of days in each month, year and leap year.

Solving problems with fractions and decimals to two decimal places Rounding decimals to whole numbers Roman numerals to 100 Recognising equivalent fractions Knowing equivalent decimals to common fractions Dividing by 10 and 100 Using factor pairs Translation of shapes Finding perimeter/area of compound shapes Solve time conversion problems

Yr 5 Changes to the Maths Curriculum – at a glance What’s been added? Understand and use decimals to 3dp Solve problems using up to 3dp and fractions Write %ages as fractions; fractions as decimals Use vocabulary of primes, prime factors, composite numbers etc Know prime numbers to 20 Understand square and cube numbers Use standard multiplication and division methods for up to 4 digits Add and subtract fractions with the same denominator Multiply proper fractions and mixed numbers by whole numbers Deduce facts based on shape knowledge Distinguish regular and irregular polygons Calculate the mean average

Compare and order fractions greater than 1 Long division 4 operations with fractions Calculate decimal equivalent of operations Understand & use order of operations (BODMAS) Plot points in all 4 quadrants Convert between miles and kilometres Name radius/diameter and know relationship Use formulae for area of triangles & parallelograms Calculate volume of 3-d shapes Use letters to represent unknowns (algebra) Generate and describe linear sequences Find solutions to unknowns in problems

Paper 1 Questions will be context free. They will assess number, calculations and fractions. (Please note, the fractions strand in the new curriculum covers fractions, decimals and percentages) Pupils to use formal methods Two marks for long division and long multiplication

Papers 2 & 3 Assesses pupils’ ability to apply mathematics to problems and to reason No significant differences in format or difficulty between the two papers Questions will be linked to the specific strands and year group references in KS2 Test framework. NO calculators

Just how important is number?

Each of the nine strands listed below will be tested on a yearly basis. You can see how much emphasis is now being placed on number, ratio and algebra (75%-85%) 15 – 25% will be measurement, geometry and statistics.
