Ernest Rutherford was born on August 30, 1871 in Brightwater, Tasman district, New Zealand. He actually does not have a middle name he just claims himself as Ernest Thompson Rutherford. (His mum’s maiden name is Thompson).He lived in a small village near Nelson.

HOW HE BECAME INTERESTED IN SCIENCE Ernest Rutherford became interested in science at a very young age. He also began experimenting with clocks, cameras and other gadgets during his childhood.

Ernest Rutherford was the first one to establish the theory of the nuclear atom to carry out a transmutation reaction (1919). He also discovered the half-life of radioactive elements and applied the studies of age determination of rocks by measuring the decay period of radium to lead-106.
