20 Bone Fractures A break in a bone Types of bone fractures – Closed (simple) fracture – break that does not penetrate the skin – Open (compound) fracture – broken bone penetrates through the skin Bone fractures are treated by reduction and immobilization – Realignment of the bone

22 Repair of Bone Fractures 1.Hematoma (blood-filled swelling) is formed 2.Break is splinted by fibrocartilage to form a callus 3.Fibrocartilage callus is replaced by a bony callus 4.Bony callus is remodeled to form a permanent patch This area of the bone is now super strong. Because of the density the bone will not re- break here. It is scarred.

52 Joints Project 1.READ & COLOR Joint Movements. 2.THEN figure out which joint is responsible for the movement using your joint HW sheet which has CLUES as to where they are on the body. Check your work with Reineke! Once you are done get your cadaver out.

53 Cadaver work: Done by end of class 1.You will be adding a femur to your cadaver which is labeled with all of the WP & coloring sheet anatomical vocabulary on the outside and inside of the bone. Draw a detailed long bone femur on paper with color showing the inside and outside details and then add it to your cadaver. 2.After you complete your long bone, you will add 1 short bone, 1 flat bone & 1 irregular bone to your cadaver including their common locations and brief description. Draw the other type of bones on paper and add them to the cadaver in a representative place. 3.Finally draw an example of each joint on the cadaver (draw the basic movement that are shown on IV Articulation System) where it exists on a human. Write the joint name & describe the movement.

56 Food journal Write down everything you eat from now on for 24 hours on a piece of paper… Try to organize by what meal it is and put down as much detail as you can (ex: 12 oz can of soda) small fry, granola bar. If you have the nutritional values note the calcium. We will analyze your NORMAL eating habits for calcium…so if you don’t usually eat ice cream don’t go out of your way today OR if you never drink milk don’t start today.
