2.  Writers organize their ideas in a logical order so that readers can understand how one idea relates to another.  One way to organize ideas is in sequence, or time order.  Read passage.  The passage is organized by describing past events and present events.  Identify sequence words in the passage.

3. In the past, California Indian people burned fields of grasses every year. After a fire, more seeds sprout, and there are fewer insects in the area to infest plants. Deergrass needs to be burned regularly so it will be healthy and produce lots of flower stalks. When redbud is burned, it responds by growing new, long, straight shoots. These days, it’s against the law for most people to set fires, so weavers have a hard time finding good basket materials.

4. Identify the time order words. First, a carver must find the right log. Next, the carver must make the log perfectly round. Then, the log is moved into the carving shed. Finally, the carver puts rough marks where he thinks each animal should go, and he begins to carve. The finished totem pole will last for many years.

5.  First, next, then, and finally are sequencing words that help make the order of ideas clear.  The concluding statement, “The finished totem pole will last for many years,” helps wrap up the composition.

6. Writing Prompt Everyone has followed directions. Think about a task you did that required you to follow directions. Now, write a paragraph that explains the steps for completing that task. 8. Peer Conference Checklist  Is the subject of the paragraph clearly stated in the first sentence?  Are events or steps described in sequence?  Has the writer used time order words?  Has the writer proofread for errors in grammar and spelling?  Are complex sentences used correctly?
